In 2026, the Suh Foundation expanded its international outreach by returning to Ensenada, where our team partnered with local physicians to provide both strabismus and cataract surgery and comprehensive ophthalmic care to underserved communities. Working in a facility originally built as an orphanage, our volunteers cared for 70 patients with a wide range of visual and developmental disabilities while performing 20 sight-restoring surgeries.
This year's mission represented a significant step forward for the Foundation. For the first time, portable phacoemulsification technology allowed our surgeons to perform modern cataract surgery in a resource-limited setting, bringing advanced surgical care to patients who otherwise would have had little access to treatment. Beyond restoring vision, these procedures restored independence, mobility, and quality of life for many individuals and their families.
Two pediatric ophthalmologists and two comprehensive ophthalmologists from a local Mexican hospital worked alongside our team throughout the mission. The partnership became a true exchange of knowledge and experience where our volunteers learned firsthand about the unique challenges of delivering eye care in Central America, while local physicians received hands-on exposure to surgical techniques, clinical approaches, and future educational opportunities through the Suh Foundation.
As the Foundation continues to grow, our mission extends beyond providing care during a single week of service. We are committed to building sustainable partnerships, expanding surgical capacity, and investing in education that empowers local healthcare professionals to serve their communities long after each mission concludes. With plans to return in 2027 and continue strengthening these relationships, the Suh Foundation remains dedicated to creating lasting improvements in global eye health through service, collaboration, and education.
